People talk about having “eagle eyes,” but did you know Red-tailed Hawks can see eight times better than the human eye? Paired with a wingspan of more than four feet, they can hunt with stealth and ease from high in the sky. As with other species of raptors, females are larger than males. Red-tailed Hawks have a discernable screech that can last 2-3 seconds, and in many popular movies the screech is used for sound effects.
Scarlet, the Red-tailed Hawk on campus, sustained a right wing injury when she was young, causing her to be “non-flighted.” Because of her injury, she cannot be released into the wild. She receives great care from our keepers and gets to interact with visitors and school children as one of the ambassador animals!
