KURT STRAND ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT AS PRESIDENT & CEO OF THE DUBUQUE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY AND THE NATIONAL MISSISSIPPI RIVER MUSEUM & AQUARIUM
DUBUQUE, Iowa — Kurt Strand, president and chief executive officer of the Dubuque County Historical Society (DCHS) and the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium, has announced his decision to retire late 2026 or early 2027. Strand leaves behind a nine-year legacy of transformation, expanded educational outreach, and heightened conservation efforts across the organization.
During his tenure, Strand guided the institution through key milestones, including the advancement of its comprehensive strategic plan, the execution of its master interpretive plan and a major refresh of core exhibits across the campus. Under his leadership, the Museum & Aquarium spearheaded critical conservation initiatives and made substantial progress in the ongoing “Preserve the Wonder” capital campaign, further cementing its reputation as a world-class cultural, environmental and educational destination.
"Reflecting on my nine years leading this exceptional institution, I am incredibly proud of what our team and board have accomplished together," said Strand. "Working alongside such dedicated staff, board of directors, and supportive community has been a true highlight of my career. Sharing this timeline now allows us to execute a thoughtful, seamless transition without missing a beat as we maintain full momentum on our strategic priorities through the end of the year."
The board of directors has initiated a succession plan and executive search process to identify Strand’s successor.

Strand will remain in his role as president and CEO through late 2026 or early 2027 to assist with the leadership handoff and ensure organizational continuity.
