Dubuque County Historical Society receives grant support from State Historical society of Iowa
DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Dubuque County Historical Society was recently awarded a $50,000 Historic Resource Development Program (HRDP) grant from the State Historical Society of Iowa.
Funding will support “Fatal Fashion”, a temporary interdisciplinary exhibition at the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium in 2027. Through the integration of historic artifacts and animal species, “Fatal Fashion” will connect Iowa’s historical fashion trends to global ecological concerns. Illuminating how nature has shaped human history and how human actions have modified ecosystems, the exhibit will fulfill the Museum’s mission to inspire stewardship toward a sustainable future. Funding will support design, development and interpretation of the exhibit. “Fatal Fashion” will work to advance the museum's visitor experience, increase public access to the society’s holdings and connect Iowa’s history to global issues.
"Through ‘Fatal Fashion’, we are tracing an ongoing historical timeline of the occupational, consumer, and environmental risks embedded in the textile, garment, and beauty industries," said Kristin Glomstad-Yoon, curator of historic collections. "Rather than treating these as isolated historical events, the exhibit will demonstrate their connection. Through fashion, we are all connected – across time, place, and species. It is through understanding the history of this shared reality that we can begin building a more sustainable future together."
